As the name indicates, Gamla Stan (Old Town) is the city´s oldest part and is filled with historical heritage. The largest island of Gamla Stan is called Stadsholmen. Stadsholmen with its narrow streets has a lot to offer. Here you can find palaces, churches and museums to souvenir shops and book stores. This medieval part of town is also home to many cafés and restaurants located in cellars reminiscent of past times. You can almost smell the ancient history when you walk down Stottsbacken street where the historic buildings still stand, creating a majestical sight.
From Stadsholem there are bridges to the two other islands of Gamla Stan, Riddarholmen and Helgeandsholmen. Riddarholmen is filled with 17th-century palaces and churches whilst Helgeandholmen is home to the current Parliament building.
