The island of Kungsholmen is situated in Lake Mälaren in Stockholm. The first inhabitants of the island were Franciscan monks that came there in the 15th century. With the Swedish reformation in 1527 the monks were expelled from the area and it became asset of the crown.
After the collapse of the Swedish Empire in early 18th century the area underwent a series of transformations. At first there were hospitals and factories were built on the island. With the industrial breakthrough the population and activity on Kungsholmen increased greatly. The Swedish military established operations in Kungholmen during this time as well.
Since the early 19th century the area has once again undergone major transformations. Instead of factories and industrial buildings, residential buildings were built along with public institutions and churches.
Today, Kungsholmen is home to Stockholm City Hall (built 1911-1923) and Stockholm Court House (built 1909-1915). The island is connected to other areas with 4 bridges and the Stockholm Metro that was established in the 1950´s.
