Like many Stockholm districts, Södermalm (Southern Isle), is an island separated from the rest of the city by one of its many waterways. With a population of over 100.000 it is one of the most densely populated areas in the Nordic countries.
Until the early 17th century Södermalm was mostly an agricultural area with few residents. At first there were mostly made up of working class houses along with a few summer houses for the wealthier Swedes. In the 18th and 19th century the Södermalm area developed further with more and more housing being built but it was not until the 20th century that Södermalm became a truly urban area. Until the late 1970´s Södermalm remained as predominantly a working class area.
Today the area is a very popular part of town and home to many restaurants, bars and cafés and features a renowned shopping district. Apartments have become expensive and hard obtain as more and more locals like to live in this once rural area of town.
SoFo
Stockholm is a very trendy town filled with fashion, culture and art. If you really want to experience the trendy side of the city, head to SoFo. SoFo is part of Södermalm and stands for „South of Folkungagatan“. It is sourrounded by Folkungagatan, Götgatan, Ringvågen and Renstiernasgata.
In SoFo you will find cafés, restaurants, small boutiques of local fashion designers, art galleries and bars. The area is also home to some of the more creative companies such as advertising agencies, online businesses and all sorts of media companies.
SoFo is a great place to spend a few relaxing hours. You can wander through the streets soaking up the atmosphere and perhaps pick up some local design.
